This is how the whole thing began, as best as I can remember. There were thunder claps in the near distance that rattled the windows so hard it threatened to break the glass. We were huddled on the floor in the kitchen of the old farm house that my grandmother and grandfather had built. We had electricity but no running water. Mama Dover always wanted running water. The lights flickered after the thunder crashed and shook the already shaky foundation on which the house was perched. My Uncle Donnie and I sat on the floor and watched as Aunt Judy cried and called out to the Lord to save of us from His wrath. I looked out the window at the bruise colored purple sky and watched as a huge forked tong of lightning light up the dark afternoon. Judy screamed. Donnie and I tried not to laugh. Neither of us let on that we were a little afraid that Judy might not be crazy but privy to some information that was unavailable to us. But we were 9 years old, Donnie was older by three months, and we still considered ourselves among the immortals who walked the planet. Death had no place in our lives, or so we thought.
